Gas is a chemical weapon first used in WW1, they were primarily used to demoralize, injure, and kill entrenched defenders, against whom the indiscriminate and generally very slow-moving or static nature of gas clouds would be most effective.

Gas can kill you sometimes. Where it did kill, it was mostly immobilized people, like the wounded lying on the ground or the unprepared who were sitting in it for an extended period of time
